Kaya and Dylan B's Amazing Writing

Kaya and Dylan B from Mrs Yollis Class Writing

This week we've been looking at narrative writing from a pair of students from Mrs Yollis class in the United States of America.  It features a dog called Buck, who is Mrs Yollis dog! We started by looking at their writing, sharing it and then completing the task of finishing the story! Not only that but when we finished our version of the story we shared it back to Mrs Yollis and she commented on our students work.

When Mrs Yollis was commenting 'live' on our students work we were amazed because we realised that we were a day ahead of the United States of America and while it was Wednesday midday here in New Zealand it was Tuesday afternoon at the same time in the USA.

It was a great example for our students to read a narrative from other students from another part of the world.  We haven't finished yet.  We are creating a wall display featuring Mrs Yollis and her students work to put on display and help us improve our writing.  Thank you Kaya, Dylan B, Mrs Yollis and all the students in your amazing classroom.  You can click on the link to the blog here.

The Gingerbread Mission: Part Two

The Gingerbread Mission - Part Two.
Their gingerbread house came to life and turned into a monster.   Nolan said “this was not in the recipe”.  “I kinda used come to life food in it as the secret ingredient” said Elie.  Nolan sighed “look” said Elie “its getting away”.   Nolan and Elie ran after it “it’s heading into the baking competition!”  They saw it eating all the food and getting bigger “that thing has lots of teeth said Nolan.   “This gives me an idea” said Elie “let’s eat it” and so they gobbled the monster up “well we may not win but we did have a good snack” said Nolan “what are you talking about” said the judge “you kicked the monsters butt” “you totally win the prize.  “Hooray” said Nolan and Elie

By Ryan Room Three.

Mrs Yollis and her class of students in the USA have been creating some amazing examples of narrative writing. This inspired our students in New Zealand to come up with an ending to their work this is Ryan example.

Gingerbread Mission - Nolan and Elie Global Work!

Today in class here in New Zealand we spent time looking at a piece of writing - nothing unusual in that however we were looking at a story written by two students in Mrs Yollis classroom in the USA, Nolan and Elie.    We loved reading their writing in class - we were all given a copy of their writing, we shared it to every student and converted it to a google doc.

We then created a plan for our writing - the story by Nolan and Elie was left at a cliffhanger and our challenge was to end it! When we created the Google Doc we shared it with Mr Webb and also Mrs Yollis.  This created a surprise for our students, because while it was Monday mid-day here in New Zealand, it was Sunday afternoon in California and Mrs Yollis was online and started editing our work.   You can read the original post by the students from Mrs Yollis classroom here and we will be posting our work in the coming days.

Jamesen's Bald Eagle Research

As part of our #Global Pals project we've been looking at studying several different countries and animals for our friends from Mrs Monaghan Class in the UK, Miss Crowther and her class in Australia and Mrs Yollis and her class in the United States.  Jamesen (who is 'half' American) has been looking at the Bald Eagle.  Our favourite fact and one we didn't know was that its proper name is the 'Pie Bald Eagle' which means 'white' (in old English) and its name has been shortened to 'Bald Eagle' which is why a Bald Eagle isnt bald!  We are really excited to be part of this project and looking forward to can't wait for the arrival of our first visitor!

Keys to My Life Student Blog

We are always looking for amazing connections and work from classrooms around the world.   One of our biggest supporters and a teacher that Mr Webb thinks is pretty amazing is Mrs Yollis who is from Califorina, USA.   She is the best blogger in the entire world.

Today in class we found out about a new student blog from one of Mrs Yollis students, 'Smiley'.  Who has started a new student blog called 'Keys to My Life'.   We spent time this morning as a class looking at the blog, thinking about the information that was posted on it and comparing the answers and the questions to our students in New Zealand.

We loved the fact that the word 'plethora' was used on the page which was a word we talked about class, what the word meant and how we'd be able to use it.  You can visit the student blog here and Mrs Yollis class page is here.

#CLRPoem: Blue Auroa Primary School Students Examples

We're loving the opportunity created by Catherine Monaghan from A Room With A View with her fantastic Twitter Hashtag for the #clrpoem.  Its also involving another amazing educator who were big fans of in New Zealand - Mrs Yollis from California.

We're having a poem a week created by the students from Auroa Primary School to learn about Poetry and create some fantastic work of their own! This week we've been producing Blue themed poems - we were looking a 'Free' Poetry which some of our students really enjoyed.  Most of our students have published these on their own individual student blogs which you can see listed on the right hand side of this blog.

Harry's very excited to have just reached 1,000 pageviews and you can read his Blue inspired Poem here.  Caro's doing an amazing job with her blog - she was wanting 8000 pageviews before end of the year, but she's about to make it to five thousands already.   Have a look at her effort here.  Brody's not only one of the best posts in the world about silage, you can read his blue poem here.  Cruz effort is here.  Abby was best senior blog post of the week, you can read about her blue poem here.   Ashton used his farm as inspiration for his blue poem.  Jaydens effort with Blue is here.  Quade created a fantastic Blue Image - and here it is linked to his blog! Jorja created this wonderful effort - have a look at this! Mackenna's also been involved and you can read it here.

A Great Holiday Project for New Zealand Students...

It might be the School Holidays at the moment but there's always an opportunity to learn. At the moment nearly half of the students from Room Three have posted during the holidays which is wonderful.

One of our friends, Mrs Yollis, has a new Poetry Project which the details of which are on her wonderful class page. The original idea and the start of the project came from another of our online friends, Mrs Monaghan from A Room with View You can read the details here.

Currently the project is 'red' however during the coming weeks all the colours of the visible spectrum are going to be covered.  'Red' is just the current theme, as it is suggested you could create a whole range of poetry based activities.

There are lots of suggestions of possible activities that you carry out.   You could create a couplet, triplet or a haiku.   You could save that into your technology and then you can either publish it onto your blog or bring it into School on Monday.

Have a think about how you could present it, what it might look like.  There is going to be a special prize for this for any students from Room Three who can complete the task during our School holidays and secondly we'll have a significant prize for the best effort.

We'd also like to thank all of University students from Southern Alabama who have been leaving comments on the blogs of the students from Room Three, Auroa Primary School.  We really appreciate the EDM310 feedback for our students and #comments4kids

Auroa Primary School: International Collaboration

While school has just finished for 2014 in New Zealand for the year we were thrilled to find out that our friends Mrs Yollis and her class from California, USA have created a video based on our students work. Earlier this year our Kapahaka Group created a series of 'How To' videos about different games that were traditional to Maori. Mrs Yollis and her class, across the other side of the world have used that video and work to teach their students
.
They would like some feedback about their videos - have they done the correct moves? They would also like to know if there are any other traditional games that are played here, or in your country that you know of.  We're very fortunate to have Mrs Yollis recognise our work, she is famous in blogging, being one of the top teachers in the world with a massive audience.  We were pleased to have 60,000 pageviews this year - Mrs Yollis has had 1.5 million.  She is an amazing commentator and a great online model and friend.   This is her class video:

Video for Mrs Yollis from Taranaki, New Zealand

This week the Auroa Primary School Kapa Haka Group has been producing a series of videos about games that we've been learning to play in Kapa Haka for our Maori language program led by Mr Tai.  You can see some of our Matariki (Maori New Year) videos and material here.

We posted early this week and we had some fantastic feedback almost straight away from our Blogging Friend, Mrs Yollis in Califorina.   Mrs Yollis is very famous, as she has a class page thats had over one and a quarter million pageviews! Mrs Yollis wonderful comment was this:

One of the things that Mrs Yollis asked was to pronounce the words again so that her students from the USA who want to learn the Maori hand game.

Today we had a small group of students who went and filmed a follow up video to their original post.  We thought about Mrs Yollis request and made sure that we concentrated on speaking clearly and slowly so the students could learn the game properly.   This is the video created by students in Room One, today for Mrs Yollis.

Auroa Primary School Student Blogs - Examples

This week its extremely exciting for the students of Room One, Auroa Primary School as we start to 'roll out' our individual student blogs.  As part of that process we are looking at some outstanding examples of individual blogs from around New Zealand and the world.

Our students this week are going to visit these blogs, choose one that they particularly like and leave a comment to the students following the procedure that we've agreed to.

Point England School is based in Auckland.  It has a fantastic range of student blogs that are available, as every student has one.   These are sample blogs from some of the students to visit.  Josephine has a great blog detailing her education.  Have a look at its layout, including the background and widgets that she has used.  You can click on the link here.

Sela is another student who has a fantastic looking blog (again think about the background, her title).  She writes about events that occur with her and her family and includes photographs and information.  You can view Sela's blog by clicking on the link here.

All of the Point England School sites are linked through their main blogs.  If you go to this link here you can visit all of the Room 18 sites.

This is Bella's site from Russel Street School.  Its a great example of someone using a blog as a portfolio for developing their work and ideas.

Another of the best sites in the world is the blog of Mrs Yollis.  She has had some amazing students in her class and some of these have continued to blog.  You can visit the sites belonging to Miriams Magic Moments here, Heathers Perfect Posts here or Come Somersault with Sarah here.  Again have a look at the backgrounds, the headings, the widgets and most of all the learning.   You can also look for more students work from Mrs Yollis class page here.
