Barefoot at School In Auroa, New Zealand

As part of the #2014gbc (Global Blogging Challenge) we've been asked to create a lesson this week for our global audience.   Yesterday in class the students had to plan a film which was targeted at being between thirty and forty five seconds in length, taught a lesson and reflected something that was unique to New Zealand.   The video was created by Emily, Izzy and Gemma and came about from a comment we've had about our students in New Zealand having bare feet at school.   Planning and storyboarding took place yesterday afternoon and this morning.  The students also fully edited the project and produced it themselves.

  1. Emily, Izzy, Gemma,

We enjoyed your Vimeo. We were amazed that you can go to school in your bare feet. We thought some of the things you do might be painful. Does it hurt when you are kicking the soccer ball? Does it hurt when you step on sharp objects like rocks or pine needles? What about stubbing your toe? We thought if we came to school in our bare feet our room would be stinky! Thanks for sharing!

  2. From Mrs. Kriese's third period class:
We are so jealous! We have to wear our shoes all day long in school. It looks so relaxing to be able to go barefoot inside and outside. Your grass looks fluffy! The hot, dry weather in Texas makes our grass kind of stale and crispy sometimes.

We wonder if it's a little painful to kick a rugby ball barefooted?

Great video! Such fun to watch!

  3. Dear Emily, Izzy, and Gemma,

We really enjoyed your video! We certainly couldn't do that in Michigan, it would be too cold, especially right now. We'd be up to our knees in snow and our toes would freeze! However, we certainly wish we could have bare feet in school. Even when the weather warms up we keep our shoes on at school.

One of my students wondered if the teachers went barefoot too. Also more than a few students said, "Ouch!" when we saw the rugby ball kicked with bare feet.

Thank you so much for sharing your video!

  5. Great Video. You are very fortunate to have the option of going barefoot at school! Most kids have to wear shoes and socks all day at school. You should take advantage of this and go barefoot as much as possible! I would probably never bring shoes with me if I went to your school! Since you don't wear shoes at school, do you wear them very often at home or when you go out? What about adults?

    1. Such a great comment but please don't forget to identify yourself so our students can comment back to you! Adults all wear shoes and students take them off when they enter the classroom.
