R3 First Mystery Skype of 2017

Yesterday in class we completed our first International Mystery Skype for 2017.  We had to guess about the location of another classroom that we were Skyping around the world.

It turns out that the class we were Skyping with was from the Stamford American International School in Singapore.

As only Mr Webb had been to Singapore it was a bit hard to understand some of the differences for the people of Singapore. We Google Earth'd their city/country as well and were amazed by all the buildings and the fact that we couldn't see any farms! It was a fantastic learning experience for our students and we look to do some more during the year.

A special thanks to Mr Kemp from the Stamford American International School for arranging this!

Questions and Answers for Mr Kemp in Singapore.

Mr Kemp, our friend and a fantastic educator from Singapore has been asking for help with a global collaboration project that he has started. He set a series of questions and is seeking answers from all around the world. The details of the project are located here on his blog. The questions that Mr Kemp and his students were looking to get answered were:

Auroa School Answers Mr Kemps Questions for Singapore from Myles Webb on Vimeo.

  • What grade are you in?
  • How many children are in your school?
  • What do you wear to school?
  • How many people are in your families?
  • What do you do when you get home from School?
  • Who does the cooking in your family? What do they like to cook?
  • Who does the cleaning in your family?
  • What do you do at the weekends?
  • What type of house do you live in?
  • Whats an important celebration you do with your family?
We decided the best way to answer these questions was to create a video of our answers.  We tried to include a local landmark - Mount Taranaki which is the volcano that dominates our area.   We had to re-shoot one video in class later because we had issues outside with the wind.

Edu Amazing Race Demo

Two fantastic online teachers, Mr Will Chamberlain and Mr Craig Kemp have created an 'Edu Amazing Race' site and were looking for ideas. We thought that this was a great idea at school and we entrusted Kaiah and Brylee from Room One to take care of the details. They came up with a format, we didn't identify where we were in our video so their were some clues: the biggest geographic feature in our area, which is a Mountain (Mount Taranaki) which you can see clearly in the background of our video. A clue about rugby and also we are a country based school (we also thought that our accents would be a clue when we did the video and looked back at it afterwards). Because their idea is based on the amazing race we wanted to have a challenge that could easily be replicated by people watching the video so we came up with kicking a rugby ball from one end of the field to the other in under 2 minutes. The ball has to be caught on the full by the person that is catching and then the second person can run around and repeat the process. We weren't sure how hard this would be if someone didn't know how to catch a rugby ball, so we had to guess about the timing. This video was created, edited and produced by Kaiah and Brylee from Room One on Tuesday 28th October 2014.
