Alyssa and Michael's iPad Tilter: 3D Printer Design

We're very excited that this week in class we've had our two new Ultimaker 2 Printers working nearly full speed so our students can complete their 3D design projects.   Today in class we had a special project worked on by a group of students.    Alyssa and her brother Michael have worked on a 3D Print design for a tilter that will allow Alyssa to use the iPad with more ease.  Currently she finds it difficult to tilt the iPad and needs assistance.  Michaels and her design addresses this as it allows her to use it with more freedom and independence.   Filmed and created by Michael and Alyssa from Room One, Auroa Primary School, Taranaki, New Zealand.

We're going to discuss the video tomorrow thinking about things like, should we show the making process, can Alyssa demonstrate how it works and have her speaking about it.

  1. Hi Alyssa and Michael, thank you so much for sharing your creation. 3D printers are amazing - but sometimes I have seen them make gimmicky things. Your creation is so useful and helpful for Alyssa. I can't wait to see the clips of the iPad tilter being made and of Alyssa demonstrating how it works for her.
Thanks for sharing your amazing creation!

Thanks so much for your feedback and I will pass it onto the students tomorrow. They can answer your questions then but I would like to thank you for your feedback and taking time to ensure that you've given them some wonderful feedback.

  3. Hi Alyssa and Michael,
    I am in awe!
What a practical solution to enable the ipad to be tilted!
I only saw a 3D printer once, in a shop window.
To me, it seemed very futuristic.
So it is great to see that you have one in school
and that you have used it in such a practical way.
    Well done
    and with every good wish,
    Merry Beau

    1. Thank you so much for your feedback. Michael was part of a group of students who gave a presentation to the New Zealand Prime Minister on Friday so we had to postpone the follow up video but I shared your comments with him and his sister.

We do enjoy using the 3D Printer and do think that its important to use it in a way that solves practical problems or tasks. As always thank you for your wonderful feedback and we appreciate it very much.

    2. Hello again,

Well done to Michael, I was very impressed to hear he was part of a group who gave a presentation to the New Zealand Prime Minister and glad to hear that the excellent teaching and learning that goes on in Auroa School is being recognised at the highest levels in your country.

      With every good wish,
      Merry Beau

  4. Hi Alyssa and Michael,
What a fantastic solution! Does your 3D printer print things in different colours or could you add a pattern? Would using two of your titlters at either side make the iPad more stable when using it in landscape mode? Was this your first design or have you experimented with different shapes? I hope you continue to use the 3D printer to bring your product designs to life!

The 3D Printer can make anything to the size of a shoe box and the colour depends on the filament that we run through it, we've about ten different colours that we are trying at the moment. Michael and Alyssa are going to respond to your questions next week, although I can tell you the design that's worked was the first try of it.

  5. Dear Alyssa and Michael,

Thank you for sharing your incredible creation! I have never seen a 3-D printer, but I certainly hear a lot about them on the Internet. They have a lot of capability!

What a useful tool you have created! I look forward to seeing your next video and seeing the iPad Tilter in action!

    Keep on creating!

I will share your feedback with the students next week we are very excited about using them and what it means for the students and ourselves. Its nice to be able to make stuff (anything to the size of a shoebox) as we need to do stuff.
